Birder Diary ("we", "our", or "the app") is a bird-watching diary app for iOS. We take your privacy seriously. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
We use Sign in with Apple for authentication. We receive your Apple user identifier and, if you choose to share it, your name. We do not receive or store your Apple ID email address unless you explicitly share it.
When you import photos, the app reads image data and EXIF metadata (date, time, GPS coordinates) from your device's photo library. Photos are stored locally on your device. We do not upload your original photos to any server.
To identify bird species, the app sends a compressed version of your photo to a third-party AI service (large language model API). These images are used solely for identification and are not stored by the service beyond the duration of the API request, in accordance with the service provider's data processing terms.
The app reads GPS coordinates embedded in your photo metadata to display where your birds were spotted. Reverse geocoding (converting coordinates to place names) is performed using Apple's on-device services. We do not collect or transmit your real-time location.
Your username and avatar are stored locally on your device. They are not transmitted to any server.
All your bird records, photos, and profile data are stored locally on your device using Apple's frameworks. We do not operate a cloud backend or sync service. If you delete the app, all local data is removed.
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes. Data is only transmitted as described above for core app functionality.
Birder Diary does not include any analytics SDKs, advertising frameworks, or user tracking tools.
Birder Diary is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Since your data is stored locally on your device, you have full control over it at all times. You can delete all data by uninstalling the app.
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date.
